I am a self-confessed soccer addict. And I have always been amazed by OWEN's quick thinking, lighting-fast feet and - most probably his greatest asset - off the ball movement. No, his greatest asset is not his electric pace over the first ten yards, for that will be gone with time, but his positional sense, his ability to sneak in front of the defenders just before the crosses come in for his finishing touch. For someone of his diminutive size, his heading skill is seriously underrated, as his two headers (including the winner) this morning against Argentina has demonstrated.
Years back in 1998, Owen burst into the international scene, lighting up the World Cup tournament with that wonder, solo goal against Argentina. He cuts into the path of one defender, left another and the goalkeeper rooted to the ground with a drop of a shoulder cum shot. His greatest asset, or rather his only asset was his pace then. And of course, his right foot must pack some awesome power to finish like that. The immediate years after, Owen was to suffer repeated setbacks from typical muscle injuries to his hamstring and groin. But all these have not put him down. In fact he has gone on from strength to strenght, embodying the Adversity Principle perhaps. He has acquired a cracking left foot over the years, obviously with hard work and practice. And this morning he has showed the World that he can finish with headers too! Not once, but twice! The winner was a carbon copy of the first goal he scored in Newcastle colours. Pity LIverpool failed to sign him. I am sure Owen will only get better as a footballer. Furthermore, he is only 24 or 25. Way to go, Owen!
