Circus Monkeys

I returned back to the fold of my office after several days' absence and immediately felt at home. PW was there, updating me with more "monkeys rushing from the falling tree" - spells resignations. Great, just what I needed to hear. Hitler's Young made me felt welcomed too. I guess it had to do with my last-ditch effort at clearing the team's workload before signing off last week. Anyhow, I appreciate her recognition that my presence makes a difference. On second thought, she might have made a monkey out of me.

Then, there is the on-going circus around the departure of my big boss - the one with the unique skin colour who protects her own kind. Someone suggested the staff put up a song item; another proposed that I play the guitar. Right, as if I would. One branch manager spent much time - I heard one whole afternoon? - purchasing material to make a quilt. I had to, reluctantly, give up twelve bucks for a meaningless goodbye buffet. Everything was just like the good old days when we were civil servants. Whatever happened to the pledge to reduce non-value added activities? Like they say, old habit dies hard. Or did I just coin that?

We were like a barrel of circus monkeys, performing an act of civility and formality. Excuse me while I go practice my "crying" for the big boss's last day. Or maybe I should throw in an armlock-around-the-knee plea, shrieking "Don't go! Don't go!" What do you think?

PS: Ever wonder how "a barrel of monkeys" comes about? See here.
