I think this is a great article written by someone who is genuinely concerned about our nation. My rebuke to a certain Tan Ah Kow who seems to be criticising incessantly with his comments on the blog: Whatever "unconvincing" reasons Dr Lim gave for not joining any party is her business, not ours. And it should not in anyway, undermine the message she was trying to get across: the overcoming of fear to speak up when you see something seriously wrong, in whatever capacity.
My point is you don't have to be a politician to talk politic. Every little voice counts. Look at how TT Durai's NKF saga was dug out, or more recently, CK Tang's kidney-for-sale (how else you think the authorities knew about it even after the ethics committee had given its go-ahead?). No matter how "clean" a government is, a check in the system is still necessary (even MM Lee seems to think so in a recent Today's article. I can't seem to find it online - can someone provide me the link?). As in Venerable Ming Yi's case, absolute power corrupts.
I know, I know, Dr Lim seems to be conflicting herself when she talked about overcoming fear and doubts to speak up, when she herself presented both in rejecting a political life. Isn't that irony working its charm? Or satirical on another level? Come on, she is a political critic, and these are her tools and entail "her business".
In my opinion, she still have certain fear in becoming a politician, especially one from the opposition party. I know I would think twice. And seriously, do you see Dr Lim joining PAP? But that does not mean she has an obligation to say it in plain words. Honesty can come coated in many forms.
